If you want to scan or do other things (apparently it can also print wirelessly, though it is not really recommended) you will need to install the drivers. The 1512 will print as long as the USB cable is connected to the computer, simply by pushing either the color print or black and white print icon on the left lower corner on the top of the printer.
I had to call HP and have their staff install the drivers by remote control, but you can do it yourself if you want.
By now I hope you have resolved your problem but since I just got a new 1512 printer and needed to know the same thing, I thought I'd post a response for anyone else who has the same problem.
